As children return to school, community needs become more apparent. So, this is a perfect time to reach out to the community. Remember, community kindness matters. Check out these locations where you can make a difference with an act of kindness. You can donate funds. And, you can give your time. Or, you can help stock supplies.

Where to give:

Here are several local locations that need your help:

  • Schools need supplies – contact your local school district to see what supplies are needed. If you have children in school, their classroom teachers will likely have a list. If you don’t have kids in school, consider donating to some of the classrooms of the neediest students. Your school district can direct you to administrators and teachers that have needs. To find information about local schools, click on your county here. Then, scroll down the page to the “Great Schools” map. You can search by map, name, or location. Links will take you to contact information for each school.
  • Food banks – as autumn approaches, food banks need to increase their store of food. Before giving, check to see what they really need. Sometimes donations are difficult for recipients to use. So, if you give canned food, make sure it has a pop-top so that no can opener is necessary. Or, if you give a boxed meal, make sure you give all the necessary ingredients to make it. You can find local food banks on the FoodPantries.org website.
  • Clothing for shelters – Often, simply a pair of new socks or gloves can make a difference to homeless members of the community. Local shelters have very specific needs. And, because most of their visitors do not have access to hygiene supplies, those are among the most requested supplies. To find the shelter nearest you, simply search this link to find shelters near you.
  • Pet Shelters – Don’t forget the furry friends. Pet shelters need food and other pet supplies. Sometimes they need volunteers to walk dogs or play with confined animals. You can find a list of West Virginia animal shelters and organizations here.
