In West Virginia, as well as anywhere else, it is important to make sure to have an emergency preparedness kit in your home. There are a few categories of items that you’ll need to be sure to cover when putting your kit together.

First off, First Aid.

You’ll need to have at least a basic first aid kit which can be purchased pre-made, or you can put one together yourself. Whichever way you acquire your kit it will need to include: several sizes of bandages, rubbing alcohol (or alcohol swabs) for sanitization, antibiotic ointment, burn cream, and liquid bandage (or simply super glue). With these items you should be able to take care of minor injuries or keep an injury under control while you make your way to a hospital.

Next, a Fire Extinguisher

After a first aid kit, another one of the most important things to have ready is a fire extinguisher. In the case of a natural disaster you’ll want to have at least two different types of extinguisher in your home. When purchasing extinguishers make sure that you have one of each type of extinguisher, one for paper or wood and debris fires, and one for kitchen applications like a grease fire.

Then, Your Emergency Kit

Lastly, you’ll want to make sure to have a basic kit with things like a flashlight, various types of batteries, simple medicines, dry food or canned food (and of course a can opener), and a good amount of bottled water. Another good addition to your kit is a hand pump water filter, in case sanitation plants are not functional. If you’ve got small children also make sure to include baby formula, diapers, and baby wipes.

Be Prepared!

Making sure to have a kit including these items will ensure you are prepared in case of a natural disaster, as well as giving you peace of mind
