Living in Preston County
Tucked into the state’s upper right corner, Preston County is peak West Virginia. From vast expanses of farmland and the beloved Cheat River to mountain music and talented artisans, pride in the land and tradition are strong. Situated off I-79, Preston County is a short drive from Morgantown, WV, West Virginia University, and accompanying urban amenities.
Preston County is home to Arthurdale, a tiny town with big historical roots. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was the driving force behind the town’s inception as a New Deal homestead subsistence project in 1933. Today Arthurdale is a historic district and home to a New Deal museum.
Enjoyment of the Appalachian lifestyle is evident throughout Preston County. Residents and visitors alike can take advantage of multiple camping and cabin sites, biking and hiking trails in hemlock forests, as well as canoeing, paddling, and the popular Cheat River Fest. The county also boasts a 13-mile section of Cheat River with 30 rapids rated Class III to Class V flanked by picturesque scenery.
