Monongalia County

One of West Virginia’s most urban areas, Monongalia County is located on the border between West Virginia and Pennsylvania, just 75 miles south of Pittsburgh. Home to West Virginia University and its nearly 30,000 students, Mon County (as it’s commonly known), is a hotbed of arts, culture, and commerce.

In addition to having a nationally recognized academic pedigree, Mon County is an outdoor lover’s delight. From kayaking, fishing, and boating on the Monongahela River or Cheat Lake to hiking, rock climbing, or ziplining amid beautiful forests, residents can enjoy being outside for many months of the year. Morgantown, the county seat, is alive with diverse restaurants; live music; and its ever-growing Wharf District, a riverside multi-use district.

Mon County offers numerous private schools, both traditional and alternative, as well as some of the state’s top-rated public schools. The unemployment rate is among the country’s lowest.
